goodbye holidays, thanks for the memories...

February 26, 2007

First day back, and it's kinda wonderful returning to Caulfield after all these years. Let me get the bad stuff out of the way first: the train is a killer. Three stations in to my trip and I'm breaking into a cold sweat thinking only another fifteen or so to go. Peninsula was a super campus because of the trees and its proximity to home but it lacked a certain something: atmosphere. It didn't feel like a University and lectures were more like classes held in massively oversized rooms. First (and only) lecture today was shared with 150 others...now that's what University should be like! There was a true party atmosphere outside and people looked happy to be there...give it a week when sausages aren't free and attitudes will change! Recognised a couple of Peninsula's real antisocial Nerds in the back row of todays lecture, didn't say hi because I didn't feel like a conversation about the graphics card they received from Santa over the break. The campus has changed quite dramatically since first attending immediately after High School - gone are some gardens only to be replaced by a five level car park and an even taller and doubly wider H-Block. I'm sure if I headed to one of the older buildings I'd still find some of the original PCs Garth and I used to leech Nintendo ROMs from!!! Alas, the first day was topped off by another bloody train trip home...damn, I hate trains. My timetable is pretty cruisey too which helps!

Was blessed with a week off work too, needless to say I have never been so grateful for a week off before. It just reached that point where I would've exploded had I have spent another seven days there. Back there Saturday though. Why are holidays never long enough?

The Olds are going away for three weeks on Thursday...pretty exciting stuff. It does however mean a return to the ironing board. I'm having a difficult time choosing between what I hate more: trains or the iron. I'm thinking trains. They're going over to South Australia with caravan in tow. Bit of dramas with the discovery the Fairlane isn't permitted to tow the caravan due to it's weight - it's some 300kgs heavier. Has brought forward the purchase of a new car which I'm equally excited about...wonder if they can have mine so I can take out the Pajero?!! Never driven a 4x4 before. The best thing about them going away? DOGGY WHEN THEY RETURN!!! Finally a little Woofs!!! Digital camera will be fully charged on the arrival date.

Optus is a shocker! According to the website it apparently takes 24hours for a Internet plan change to take effect. That time came and went so I called and surprisingly got through without a wait. Was assisted by a very helpful lady who told me she'd manually change it and it'll be done within two hours. Yep, two hours came and went along with another 18...so called again. This time on hold for 31 minutes (God Bless speakerphone!), was told again it would be two hours. Fortunately that time it was done. I find it amusing these companies can cap you (slow you down) when you've reached transfer limits within fifteen minutes but need, in my case, fifty hours to change a plan.

Bought another 1Gb of RAM a few days ago, will have to try Vista again at some stage. I already know it won't last and that I'll be back to XP within a day. Bugger it, will wait for first service pack before I try again, it simply doesn't feel finished at the moment. Also had to buy another Hard Disk...my poor 160Gb external drive became full and I couldn't be bothered burning everything to DVD. Will now keep all my TV shows and downloads on the 500Gb one. Was talking to one of Dads work colleagues yesterday and he mentioned storage...reminded him that back in 1994 with our first PC it had a MASSIVE 340Mb Disk and 4Mb RAM. Back then the idea of filling 340Mb seemed like an impossible task! Funny how things have changed.

Footy season is upon us again. Well, if you consider Pre-Season the beginning of the season. Now to decide whether to enter the same tipping competition as we've done in previous years or change to another. Hopefully the Blues can pick up their act this season after reports of their dire financial situation.
