Goodbye Vista...
October 22, 2009
Earlier today Microsoft released Windows 7. Fortunately some students are able to receive a discount from Microsoft and obtain the new operating system for $49.95. I'm happy paying this amount not the exuberant $400 some retail stores are offering.
I was able to beta test Windows 7 (like most of the population!) and even though it sat on my system for months I only played with it maybe four of five times for short periods of time.
I was hoping to buy and download around midnight but unfortunately it was only made available around 6am. Downloaded and went to be sometime around 7am. Woke around 10am and my journey to install began. Decided to complete a fresh install not an upgrade to Vista x64, it provides a chance to clean out all the crap that has accumulated over the past twelve months.
I'll update this page as the day progresses:
10:00 - Let the games begin! Was a 3GB download, and the shitty way Microsoft distribute the files makes it difficult to create a boot-disc later on. This isn't an immediate concern.
10:40 - Installation went smooth, no issues. Pretty much identical to installing Vista.
10:50 - First priority is to install Office and Outlook. Takes a while, again no dramas. While this is happening I'm returning to bed for a few extra minutes of snoozing!
11:40 - Let the updates and service packs begin. My download limits have taken an absolute hammering, will be rationing for rest of month.
13:00 - With the main stuff done I can finally have a play around and begin to customise things.
14:00 - HATE IT. Absolutely hate Windows 7. The default task bar shits me and the start menu is driving me absolutely insane. I prefer the classic menus and this version doesn't allow it. All this 'pin this' and 'unpin this'...I just want things to work. I hate how the 'All Programs' part of the start menu works. With the classic menu all my programs could be see, now I've got to scroll up and down. Vista permitted both the classic and newer style start menu which is fine because it allowed the user freedom to choose...Windows 7 only has this newer menu.
16:00 - Still hate it. Regretting the upgrade now, should've stuck with Vista. Even the fonts appear slightly blurred, it's giving me a headache. I should be at Uni!
16:10 - Better go to Uni! Gives me a chance to get away from this waste of money. Ironically the class I'm running late for evaluates user interfaces!
20:00 - Home from Uni, can't be bothered working on anything tonight, giving me a headache. Hopefully when I wake tomorrow Microsoft has released an update that will reinstate the classic start menu I'm craving.
I stream downloaded movies and TV shows over the wireless network to a media player in the lounge room, found out that device isn't compatible with Windows 7 yet. Bloody hell, will anything o right?
Going out tonight, will not think about Windows once!
